Portland is the home of country music super-star Ronnie McDowell. Ronnie is also an accomplished artist. Take a look at the town where Ronnie grew up and see some of the scenes that appear in Ronnie's paintings. Stop by the 109 Family Restaurant at 603 North Broadway. There you'll see a large mural of a strawberry field which Ronnie painted. The building itself is a copy the old Portland train depot which was featured in Ronnie's painting "I'll Be Home for Christmas." Head north on I-65 to exit 53 in Kentucky. Here you will find one of the most amazing sites on the planet: Mammoth Cave. This is the world's longest known cave system, with more than 367 miles explored. The National Park Service has done an excellent job of presenting and protecting the cave system. You will find everything from easy walks into a huge cave entrance to rugged trips where you actually crawl through tiny passages in the cave system. Many visitors from Europe complain that certain caves in the United States are run like amusement parks. Not so with Mammoth Cave. This is the place to visit if you want to see and explore, well, caves!
