The Cumberland Gap tunnel is a pair of 4,600-feet-long tunnels, bored through solid rock, which carry U.S. 25E from Tennessee into Kentucky.  We highly recommend going through the tunnels.  It's quite an experience.  The construction of the Cumberland Gap Tunnel was a crucial step in the broader goal of restoring the Cumberland Gap to the way it appeared to the earliest pioneers.  Before the tunnels wee built, U.S. 25E went up and over the actual Cumberland Gap.  The goal was to restore the gap to the way it was in the 1700s.  During this time period, the Cumberland Gap was one of the few places settlers could cross the Appalachian Mountains as America expanded westward.  It is estimated that between 200,000 and 300,000 immigrants passed through the gap on their way into Kentucky and the Ohio Valley before 1810.  Photo courtesy National Parks Service.

The story of the first doorway to the west is commemorated at the national park, located where the borders of Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia meet. Carved by wind and water, Cumberland Gap forms a major break in the formidable Appalachian Mountain chain. First used by large game animals in their migratory journeys, followed by Native Americans, the Cumberland Gap was the first and best avenue for the settlement of the interior of this nation. From 1775 to 1810, the Gap's heyday, between 200,000 and 300,000 men, women, and children from all walks of life, crossed the Gap into "Kentuckee."
