Sundial

Located southwest of Lafayette, this sundial was built in 1917 as a hobby by Mr. Elmer White.  The sundial is 20 to 25 feet across, and the gnomon is 15 to 20 feet high.  Mr. White purportedly tore down his first two sundials before achieving success with the third one which is the one that stands today.  The sundial is made of steel and concrete and is located in the Pleasant Valley community of Macon County.

At the time it was built, and for many years thereafter, this sundial was considered the largest sundial in the world.

The sundial is located on private property in somebody's side yard.  The homeowners, however, welcome an occasional visitor.  Please feel free to stop and look at the sundial, but please respect the homeowner's privacy and property.

You can see a picture of the sundial above.  You can also see a sketch of the sundial in the Macon County seal and flag!

Macon County seal
If you look just above the "1842" in the Macon County seal, you will see the sundial (in white).
